who has studied with Scott or read his lighting book,
knows that for outdoor portraits, he strongly promotes
the use of the beautiful, magic hour light that occurs
just after the sun drops below the horizon. There is just
no substitute for a large, soft, directional source of
light for creating studio quality, natural looking
portraits outdoors.
When portraits must be made while the sun is above the horizon, flash fill and the use of reflectors give far less than studio quality light and can look downright bad. This is what inspired Scott to create a set of special, portable diffusion panels, specifically designed to allow the photographer to have more time in the late afternoon or early morning to do portraits without sacrificing light quality. Scott's LightingMagic Sun Panels are ultra light, portable, inexpensive, effective and easy to use. They are so effective, that under the very worst, harsh, direct sun conditions, you will marvel at the studio quality light that you create almost instantly. The
two portraits below were taken only seconds apart. Look
at the harsh, nearly black shadows on the faces in the
image on the left. Then look at the incredible change to
the lighting in the image on the right. We went from
hard, ugly lighting with busy, dark backgrounds and dark
shadows to studio perfect lighting with pleasing
backgrounds in only seconds.
With LightingMagic Sun Panels, you can quickly go from harshly lit, unflattering situations with dark, busy backgrounds to perfectly lit images with softer, lighter backgrounds. It is easy to create truly professional portraits under difficult lighting conditions. Using
these panels is very simple. Pose your subject(s) so that
the late afternoon or early morning sun is lighting the
frontal features of their face at an angle just the way
you would in the camera room, making sure the light is
reaching both eyes equally. Once the pose is established
for the position of the sun, simply hold a sun panel
between the subject and the sun, keeping the panel as
close to the subject as possible without it being seen in
the viewfinder. Once you take your meter reading and set
your camera's F stop, you are ready to create studio
quality portraits during one of the worst lighting
conditions a photographer can face. The harsh, direct
sun.
One of the most dramatic benefits to using these panels is during afternoon or morning weddings. Many consumers plan weddings in scenic outdoor locations but give little thought as to what lighting conditions the photographer may have to deal with on wedding day. LightingMagic Sun Panels can offer dramatically improved images in many direct sun situations. They can be used quickly without a lot of setup and offer huge improvements over flash fill and reflectors. You can enjoy studio quality lighting even with hot, direct, mid-afternoon or mid-morning sunlight.
When you order LightingMagic Sun Panels, Scott includes information on techniques to further improve the quality and professional look of your portraits. For a more
